Dear friends, it’s time to talk about my place of daily pilgrimage when in St. Petersburg – the Volchek boulangerie-bakery as everything there is so divinely tasty it should be illegal.
The range of stuff is impressive: fluffy and tender pastry (maple pecans – decent croissants – pain aux raisins – sochnikis), home made pies, cakes and cheesecakes, flans, chocolate and traditional Smetanniks (sour cream cake), various eclairs, tarts with strawberries or cherries, the legendary Russian “Kartoshkas” (cocoa-rum buttercream cakes, the name literally means potato because of the shape and color), colorful macaroons, waffles and much more. They also serve decent and unpretentious coffee like cappuccino, americano and latte.
The prices are super affordable, the food is simple, clean (I am the biggest food snob) and fresh out of the oven, the place itself is beautiful and the staff is friendly and nice. Did I mention that they have Frank Sinatra on the radio?! Is that a dream?
Super bonus: you get a 33% discount on everything after 9:30 pm.
I am totally sold.
